Just joined Pinterest a few days ago and love it! I could spend hours looking at everybody's beautiful, interesting and original stuff picked from the web! Pinterest is an online pinboard, where you can browse and share all the nice stuff you find on the web. As a new user I'm struggling a little with the features (if you visit my account you will see that my pinboards are almost empty!) but I guess I will get it all in my pocket shortly... Finally I found a friendly way to collect my faves!

My twisted interpretation of the scene“Painting The Roses Red” from Lewis Carrols “Alices Adventures in Wonderland”.
In an alternate imaginary version, Alice gets rid of the evil Queen in a hidden garden… now she has fresh red paint for her adored roses.

My great challenge in this illustration was to draw the rose! I made 3 failed attempts until creating my final version… almost 3 in the morning and finally got
it! Hope you like it!

My Chest of Curiosities: Sorelle

There are so much fun, beautiful and enchanting treasures I find in the internet that I'd love to share with you through my Chest of Curiosities, a wish box that keeps my favorite things, curiosities and magical findings in a special place for you to admire.

The first jewel I want to take out of my chest is this magical book, Sorelle, written by Matz Mainka and illustrated by celebrated Spanish illustrator Ana Juan.

Sorelle is the tale of two sisters, joined together by their strong reddish root-like hair. They grew up in solitude, in a world of their own whose access they denied to anyone else… until a spring day when one of them finally met love.

Sorelle is an obscure story about love, sadness and the sickness of obsession; a nebulous world inhabited by gloomy characters and their inner monsters.

This wonderfully illustrated book is actually edited in Italian only, so I can hardly wait for it to be edited in Spanish or English as well! A must have for all those fantasy/gothic lovers!

"Why is a raven like a writing desk?", asked the Mad Hatter.
The real point of the riddle is that... it has no answer! Lewis Carroll, never intended to give any logical or real answer to the question, it was just kinda clue which reveals the long way between the whimsical and creative children's imagination and the logical (and sometimes boring!) adult thinking.
This is my interpretation of the Mad Riddle. So much fun creating this Mad Hatter's female version (my second one)!!

New Work: Pierrette Under the Icy Moon

Always loved the commedia dell’arte imagery, and Pierrot, the sad clown (Pierrette in my female version) has been always a really beloved character for me.
Pierrette is the french female version of Pierrot, also known as Pedrolino or Polichinella, whose origins are in the mid 16th-century in Italy.

Sandra, from the Zazzle Store sandygrafik, answered some questions about her artistic style and her time at Zazzle. Check out the interview below and don’t forget to check out her store sandygrafik!

Zazzle: Tell us a little bit about yourself, and your artistic style.

Sandra: I’m a Peruvian born freelance graphic designer, self-taught illustrator and mom of two adorable kids, Zoey (3) and Fabricio (9), currently living in Denver, CO. I’m passionate especially on vector illustration using different textures and patterns that makes my illos richer and brighter. I really enjoy recreating characters from classic fairytales and giving birth to new magical creatures, sometimes bright and colorful, sometimes dark and gloomy, depending on my mood.

Zazzle: A lot of your work seems to be more whimsical, are there other styles of art you enjoy as well?

Sandra: Oh sure! I love whimsical art but I also enjoy photography and conceptual art. As a graphic designer I really love vector illustration… it’s like creating intricate puzzles, giving each form different textures and patterns… I have so much fun! And little by little, I can see how the image grows and turns in a complete character. However I enjoy experimenting with traditional media such as inks and watercolors. Sometimes I mix all these medias and create my designs which I call digi-collage.

Zazzle: What’s your inspiration for your designs?

Sandra: I always have been a daytime dreamer, getting lost in classic fairytale books and fantasy movies like The Never Ending Story, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth… then I discovered Tim Burton and fell in love with his eerie-but-adorable characters… he is a big inspiration on my work!

Zazzle: What’s been your favorite design you’ve created, and why?

Sandra: I’ll choose especially Queen of Hearts, Sakura Girl and Aquamarine Mermaid. Each girl has a little story to share! Queen of Hearts was such a challenge for me because I’ve always wanted to make caricatures or cartoons, and I guess this was my first good attempt!

Sakura Girl was another challenge for me! I remember this absolutely adorable Japanese figurine that my grandfather received as a gift before I was born… it was in my living room for years until it got lost when I was little. No pictures of my beloved figurine were left, just a blurry image in my mind, until Sakura Girl was born!

I guess Aquamarine was a recreation of my big-eyed dolls with curly hair drawings from my childhood, mixed with these fantastic imaginary sea creatures from fairytales. Turquoise and navy blue are my favorite colors, so I created this pattern for her tail which I love!

Zazzle: When you are not creating art, what are you other hobbies?

Sandra: I’m creating jewelry, handmade goodies and accesories featuring my girls and other designs which are currently on sale in my Etsy and ArtFire shops... (read more)

I'm sorry it's been a while since I've posted! I wasn't really out of town but I took the time to celebrating my kids birthday (Fabi was turning 9 and Zoe 3), getting ready for the back to school, pool time, listing new products in my Etsy store, more pool time, small trips with the family and more pool time!

And also I'm creating my new zodiac series, but I'm getting stucked in some of my girls... I guess the lazy fairy is making tricks to me!

Lady Valentine

This cutie is included in my "Paper Dolls" series. I used color pencils and ink on recycled cardboard.

The idea is to recreate my imaginary ladies using the lesser quantity of materials, like different types of recycled paper, ink and no more than two colors, including white.

She is my third character from my "Wonderland" series, based on the characters of the magnificent Tim Burton's "Alice In Wonderland". I'm a fan at heart of this genius, love his art and his films and these illos are my little tribute to his creativity.

Mail Me a Mermaid

Wishing you a Happy 2010 full of joy and creativity!

This is my contribution to the British-based art project Mail Me Art. My little mermaid was created on a cushioned rugged envelope using black markers, white gel pen and colour pencils.
The idea of this project is to submit art mailed in on postcards, envelopes, boxes, cardboard tubes and any kind of pieces that can be mailed. Every month a winner is chosen and the project culminates in a publication of a book with a selection of some of the best pieces submitted over the course of the year and an exhibition.

Esta es mi contribución para el proyecto artístico británico Mail Me Art. Mi sirenita fue creada en un sobre de envío acolchado utilizando tinta negra, gel blanco y lápices de colores.
La idea de este proyecto es enviar arte creado sobre postales, sobres, cajas, tubos de cartón y cualquier tipo de material que pueda ser enviado por correo. The first thing that came quickly to my mind when I saw the new topic was my dear nebulous city, left behind almost 6 years ago. Sometimes the mist arrives to the coast and it's so dense that you can hardly see the buildings in front of you! I made this stamp of my beloved Faro de La Marina (Navy's Lighthouse) in Miraflores (Lima, Peru).

I made these cute Baptism cards for two buyers from my etsy shop and I want to share my pics with you! These were printed at home on textured paper and then embellished with different wooden shapes and baby ribbons. Wax paper envelopes were included.
